Obituary of Jon Stevens Korper
Jon Stevens Korper, 76, beloved husband of Barbara (Mahoney) Korper died at home with his family on Tuesday March 22, 2011 after an extended battle with cancer. Besides his wife he is survived his three children, Geoffrey and his wife Erica of Killingworth, Elisabeth Korper of Clinton, and Alison Colebert and her husband Stephen of Lititz, Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren, Aidan and Hannah Korper, and Charlie and Jillian Colebert. Mr. Korper was predeceased by a daughter Susan Korper, and two brothers, Remington Korper and Fordham Korper. He was a resident of Centerbrook for the past 22 years. An army veteran of the Korean War era, he served with the occupation forces in Berlin, Germany from 1953 through 1956. Following his army service, he attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Mr. Korper joined the News Times in Danbury as a reporter and photographer, and then the New Haven Register where he covered the Valley-Shore area for several years, rising to bureau chief. He joined Soundings, a news and feature publication for pleasure boating, where he served as editor. He joined the Record-Journal in Meriden, and worked as news editor. Following his retirement, he became a paralegal and worked with Holth & Coleman in New London. Jon enjoyed boating, photography, and playing guitar. He was a member of the Niantic Sportsman Association. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday March 25 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 14 Prospect ST in Essex. Friends are invited to join the family for visitation at Robinson, Wright, and Weymer Funeral Home 34 Main St. in Centerbrook from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Friday. Memorial donations may be made to the Yankee Golden Retriever rescue organization.
